Forum will focus on nanotechnology applications in manufacturing
The Nano Network, a program of NorTech--Northeast Ohio’s technology based economic development organization--and the Mahoning & Shenango Valley Advanced Manufacturing Initiative today announced the groups will partner to host the Nanotechnology Manufacturers’ Forum, October 26 in Youngstown, Ohio. The event will encourage collaboration between nanotechnology experts and traditional manufacturers to develop more efficient ways to enhance products, through application of the small science. The forum will take place at the DeYor Performing Arts Center (260 Federal Plaza West, Youngstown) from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The Nanotechnology Manufacturers’ Forum is one of a series of events scheduled for Nano Week 2007, a five-day series of nanotechnology events that first debuted in 2004.Visit the forum website for more details:

“Innovations in technology can be spurred by cultivating an understanding and appreciation of cutting-edge research, development and commercialization. Nanotechnology, in which nanoscale characteristics of materials dictate new properties or behavior, falls into this category and can be a great stimulus to propel traditional manufacturing forward. The Nano Manufacturers’ Forum will provide information on how manufacturing is and will continue to benefit from developments in nanotechnology, thereby encouraging companies to investigate their own solutions for innovation,” said Alexis Abramson, Vice President for Technology Innovation at NorTech and Executive Director of the Nano Network.
The forum is directed to representatives of manufacturing companies, including those who hold senior technical positions; business executives; marketing and sales representatives; entrepreneurs; policy makers and economic development leaders. Those who attend will gain an understanding of nanotechnology, learn how to make product and process improvements, and generate new market opportunities.
“This forum will allow traditional manufacturing companies an opportunity to learn how to incorporate nanotechnology into their manufacturing processes and gain a competitive edge in their industry. In essence, the forum will provide today’s manufacturers with solutions for tomorrow” said Mike Garvey, Chairman of the Mahoning & Shenango Valley Advanced Manufacturing Initiative and President of M-7 Technologies.
Speakers for the forum are invited executives from companies and organizations leading the commercialization of nanotechnology. They include:
Daniel Branagan, CTO of NanoSteel, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Mr. Branagan will discuss NanoSteel’s patented Super Hard Steel (SHS) products that are iron-based materials, engineered to increase the life of critical industrial equipment and system components.
Klaus-Markus Peters, General Manager, Fireline TCON, Inc., a Youngstown company that manufactures high-temperature vacuum-formed ceramic fiber products and fused-silica refectories utilized by advanced technology industries, such as the aerospace industry.
Dan Rardon, Manager of Advanced Technologies, PPG Industries, Inc. based in Pittsburgh, will give an overview of commercial nano-enabled products and technology at PPG as well as their work with Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center.
Andrew Sherman, CEO, Powdermet Inc., located in Euclid, Ohio will discuss how to develop and manufacture metal and ceramic nanoengineered fine powders and particulates for defense and cleantech industries.
Alexis Abramson, Ph.D., Vice President of Technology Innovation in Commercialization and Nanotechnology at NorTech and Executive Director of the Nano-Network, will discuss the basics of nanotechnology during ‘Nano 101’ for traditional manufacturers.
Dave Karpinski, Vice President of Technology Innovation in Manufacturing and Electronics will discuss the soon-to-be launched program focused on encouraging innovation in manufacturing companies, an initiative created in partnership between NorTech and MAGNET.
John Monica, Jr., Partner, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, LLP, will discuss Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) issues associated with nanotechnology.
Registration for the event is $50 for General Attendees and $25 Students with a valid student ID. The deadline for early registration is October 5. After October 5, the registration fee for General Attendees will be $65. Register online at: www.jumpstartinc.org/JSExchange/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=308. About the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative:
The mission of the Mahoning & Shenango Valley Advanced Manufacturing Initiative is to spur the development of advanced products and processes by linking businesses with higher education and other institutions that facilitate growth and innovation. http://msvami.googlepages.com/
About the Nano-Network:
The Nano-Network was formed by scientists, entrepreneurs and financiers to improve and expand nanotechnology research and commercialization activities and capacities in Northeast Ohio, and throughout the nation. The Nano-Network is one of the largest and best-known privately funded, "grass roots" nanotechnology organizations in the U.S. The Nano-Network is currently managed by NorTech (www.nortech.org), a regional economic development organization focused on innovation, technology and entrepreneurship in Northeast Ohio. NorTech's relationship with the Nano-Network provides the group with structure, contacts and resources to further promote nanotechnology in Ohio and the United States. www.nano-network.org
