Presents:
"From the Lab to Commercialization:
Nanotechnology Perspectives from Oak Ridge National Laboratory"

Featuring:
Linda L. Horton, Ph.D.
Director, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Dr. Horton is the Director for the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, one of the five new Department of Energy (DOE) nanoscale science research centers. With a newly constructed facility, CNMS is a national user facility in nanoscience technology. Dr. Horton is also the Program Director for the Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Materials and Engineering Physics Program for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This program includes basic theoretical studies for materials research; electron microscopy research, including operation of the Shared Research Equipment user program; and research focused on understanding of the synthesis and properties for intermetallics, advanced ceramics, and nanoscale materials systems.

Dr. Horton’s personal research has emphasized applications of electron microscopy to materials science problems and has included investigations of the effects of irradiation on the structure and properties of materials and studies of diamond thin films. She has authored more than 50 publications and has co-edited a book on diamond thin films. For ASM International, she has served as a Trustee, is a Fellow of the Society, has held a number of committee appointments including chair of the Council of Fellows, and has served in the full range of offices in the Oak Ridge Chapter. She holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Materials Science from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Grove City College, Pennsylvania. She lives in Oak Ridge with her three children and husband, Dr. Joe Horton.
