Larry Sears has completed the circuit. Larry has a strong interest in electrical engineering education, our community and Case. He and his wife, Sally, have donated $5.9 million for the construction and outfitting of a new undergraduate design laboratory at Case. This public unveiling of the Sears Undergraduate Design Laboratory will showcase this state-of-the-art facility that will have prospective students, parents, and you walking away saying “WOW!”
Sears founded Hexagram, Inc., as a “design and build” shop, providing a wide variety of products for various companies. Eventually, Hexagram developed a unique network technology which provides wireless meter reading for utilities. Today, Hexagram is an industry leader and more than three million meters are read by Hexagram telemetry products. In February 2006, Hexagram, located in Beachwood, Ohio, was acquired and became an autonomous subsidiary of ESCO Technologies Inc. This is a very interesting journey and story, and a great example of a Northeast Ohio entrepreneurial success.
At our next Northeast Ohio Electronics Cluster event on Wednesday, November 1, the Case School of Engineering and Mr. Sears will publicly showcase the laboratory for the first time. Both Larry Sears and Norman Tien, Nord Professor of Engineering and chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case, will discuss electrical engineering education, the creative process, and the significance of the Sears Undergraduate Design Laboratory to Case, our region, and the Electronics industry. Larry will follow with details on Hexagram’s success story, the technology behind their meter reading telemetry system, and electronics entrepreneurism in Northeast Ohio.
